Gaza urgently needs a more effective humanitarian approach | Israel-Palestine conflict

A ceasefire agreement in Gaza is now concluded for a month. There were critical moments and violations, but the brokers have so far managed to keep the deal alive.

This allowed many people who have displaced 1.9 million people to return to the areas from which they fled, which facilitated the pressure on the southern and central Gaza, which hosted large temporary camps without the necessary infrastructure.

Certainly, the ceasefire brought a feeling of comfort to the Gaza Strip, which has suffered unimaginable suffering for 15 months. But for families who survived the bombing and bright destruction, the battle has not ended yet.

They face a new war – one against poverty, hunger, homelessness and despair. The houses are in ruin, and hospitals are sunk, and schools are destroyed or the displaced and homeless are still present. Gaza has been appointed for decades.

Over the past weeks, we have seen Aid Access have been greatly enhanced in the tape, especially the north, which was besieged for several months. But there are still major challenges.

On the ground, colleagues and friends continued to decide the difficulties in reaching food, water, medicine and supplies. Distribution still represents a major challenge due to damaged infrastructure, but it is not the only problem.

There are still barriers in front of the entry of different basic elements. The ban on trucks carrying tents, mobile homes and heavy machines to purify the rubble brought the ceasefire deal to the semi -birth last week. Because there is no appropriate shelter, many Palestinian families are still suffering from harsh weather conditions across the Gaza Strip, but in particular in the north, where the rate of destruction of civil buildings is the highest.

Many of our colleagues say they have not yet seen any sign of blankets or tents. They are still being subjected to elements, unable to properly carry out their life -saving business.

Some beneficiaries share that they have stopped showering for their children because of the harsh cold. Sarah, a mother of three children living in Deir Pala, told our team earlier this month that she used to bathe her children at sea, but she is no longer able to do this because she is afraid to be ill. As a lack of medicine continues, this may be the death penalty for a small child.

Although a large amount of food entered the tape – especially compared to a few months – there are still great challenges in meeting the nutritional needs of the Palestinians.

The aid packages are filled exclusively with the store elements. Oil, flour, ghee, rice, canned beans, tomatoes and tuna. There are no new fruits, vegetables, meat or eggs. The health effects in the long run for 15 months without a new food will only be understood in the coming years.

Worse, these aid packages are still not enough and do not reach all people in need. In fact, for most of the population in Gaza, he has not seen access to assistance any significant improvement because the initial ceasefire began.

Fatima*, who is a 21 -year -old mother, says she is still suffering from the same conditions she faced months ago. Her tent leaks into the rain and falls in the wind. She did not spend a night without tears in 16 months. Her children, however, have no energy to cry anymore. They starved and ill. Although aid is increasing in the region, it still does not find food and food they need to survive.

Gaza requires 600 trucks of food per day for at least four months in a row to treat acute malnutrition. Hundreds of others will be needed every day to return to a human standard, and for the coming years.

There are now many nutrients such as eggs, chicken, fresh fruits and vegetables in some parts of Gaza, but are offered for sale. This is because a large part of the trucks that entered Gaza is not aid. They carry commercial commodities, including food, which are then sold to a few Palestinians who can afford them at exorbitant prices.

Humanitarian agencies have largely swore the purchase of goods to re -sell them for fear of paying the already high prices to civilians. However, there are reports that eggs cost $ 40, $ 50, and up to $ 60 for 12 -year cartoon. In the south, where it is supposed to reach supplies, flour bags can reach $ 100.

It is clear that the current humanitarian response cannot provide what Palestinians in Gaza need to start rebuilding their lives.

Burned gas. Most of its agricultural lands were destroyed and parts of them were covered with revenge or toxic remains – the remains of a violent bombing campaign against the civilian population. Nothing will grow for years to come.

The economy of the tape is destroyed. The vast majority of people of working age are unemployed and have no hope to secure work in the near future.

Palestinian families can not simply stay of bundles of flour, rice and canned fish.

With the distribution of aid and dignity stumbled, the urgency was not more clear. People in Gaza need a more dignified way to receive support that can help them recover in the long run.

When seeing shortcomings in the current humanitarian response, our organization decided to launch the “Extension of your table” initiative, which is rooted in solidarity, sympathy, and common humanity. Instead of relying on inconsistent and insufficient aid that reaches Gaza, we enable people all over the world to make a tangible change through twins with families in Gaza.

Through monthly donations, people can support a Palestinian family directly, provide not only food but also dignity and hope to improve tomorrow. The beneficiaries will receive cash vouchers that enable them to determine how to meet their own needs – a choice that has not been presented to them since the beginning of terror in Gaza.

Providing families with the dignity of choice in how to care for themselves does not even start to address problems, but it will be the beginning. We hope this initiative will help restore the agency, enhance links, and ensure the basic needs of Palestinian men, women and children, who have suffered from an unimaginable suffering and destruction.

Such a comprehensive approach can not only provide immediate relief, but support for economic recovery, education and health.

We strongly hope that other organizations will also adopt various and more efficient strategies in Gaza more generous and human support for the Palestinians. The way to recover will be long, but we can be part of the solution.
