Zelensky buoyant, but Europe far from able to replace US security guarantees

Witness: Zelinski asked about the Russian circumstances in the ceasefire deal

President Voludmir Zelinsky was in a mood when I met him in Paris with a committee of three other European journalists. He had interrupted a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at Ellisi Palace and returned there to what he called “Titi TT dinner” after the interview.

Macron did not launch the red carpet. The Eiffel Tower was behind Zelensky in a photo window while we talked in one of the great Paris museums, lighting in yellow and blue, and the colors of the Ukrainian national flag.

The French wanted to feel as if he were among the friends. Zelinski came to Paris to meet leaders and diplomats from 30 other countries working on what they can contribute to the “coalition from the desire”, a group that UK Prime Minister Sir Kerr Starmer and Emmanuel Macron try to provide Ukraine security guarantees if there is a long -term stop.

Zelinski’s welcome in Paris was a clear contradiction with US President Donald Trump gave him. Vice President JD Vance when he visited the White House last month.

After their verbal attack, Zelinski had been inactive to the White House, and it was not long after that, he ordered the suspension of American military aid and intelligence to Ukraine.

It was restored after Zelensky, which was advised by the British, the French and other European allies, came out from his way to fix his walls with Trump and his management.

He has turned into this type of absolute language that Trump claims and agreed to an American ceasefire plan for 30 unconditional days. His insistence on US security guarantees first, to support any ceasefire.

But although American military and intelligence assistance flows, Trump’s harsh comment left it, which cost Ukrainian’s life a deep feeling of uncomfortable in Ukraine and among its European allies.

The evidence accumulates that the United States of Trump is not a reliable ally. It is easier to draw scenarios that may not be an ally at all.

Most European leaders are still trying to act publicly as if the 80 -year -old coalition with the United States was healthy. But the gathering of 30 countries in Paris indicates that they realize that they can no longer rely on the advantages of the United States.

The American presidents who returned to Dwight de Ezenhauer in the late fifties of the last century, and for a good reason, complained about obtaining a European ride from the US security blanket over Europe. Trump finally pulled it.

Europe has discipline and no chaos

During the interview, Zelinski praised a set of plans that are formulated in Western Europe – led by the United Kingdom, France and Germany – to spend more on the defense.

He suggested that within three to five years, “if things go as they are now,” Europe may catch up with the United States.

At best, this appreciation is very optimistic, less precise and more generous gesture to the appreciation of European allies, unlike Americans, suspends some conditions and chains to support Ukraine.

Europe, Zelinski said, “discipline, not chaos.” This may be seen as inclined and unreasonable comparison with transformations and reaching the White House Trump.

I asked him about the circumstances that President Russia Vladimir Putin has associated with the latest small step in the Trump peace initiative, which is the ceasefire in the Black Sea.

After Ukraine and Russia held separate meetings with Americans in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Kremlin issued a statement that requires concessions as Russia’s price for a ceasefire.

The most important demand was for a Russian -owned Russian bank to accept the rapid system of international payments. It would open the door again to the prevailing global trade of Russia.

This decision does not depend on Trump, as there is Swift in Belgium.

The European Union’s foreign affairs spokeswoman stated by saying that one of the “main pre -conditions” to lift or amend the sanctions against Russia was “the end of the unjustified and unjustified Russian aggression in Ukraine and the unconditional withdrawal of all Russian military forces from the entire lands of Ukrain.”

Even Trump, who refrains from criticizing Putin, suggested that Russia had “wounded its feet” in negotiations with the United States. He reminded him of his commercial professional life.

“I have done it over the years … I don’t want to sign a contract. I want to stay in the game,” said the American cable news channel.

Zelensky asked about the place of ceasefire, given the demands of Russia. He called for a firm response from the Americans.

“If America will stand strongly and do not bow to the conditions of the Russians – we are standing on our land.

“We are defending that; we have shown our flexibility for everyone … and now it is very important that our partners be flexible and powerful, at least, at least, as we are.”

I asked if he believed that the Americans would remain strong.

“I hope so. I hope that. God bless you. They will see. But we will see.”

Zelensky has no choice about mentioning his faith in America Trump, although he must have serious doubts.

Trump’s decision to punish Ukraine by cutting military intelligence over the firing of missiles in Russia was an immediate and deadly impact, and Zelinski had to work hard to prepare Trump. He does not want to happen again.

He was open about why he had to try to stay near Trump, even when it seemed that the American president was prioritizing to restore relations with Moscow as he repeated Russian propaganda points, not the least of which is the lie that Ukraine began in the war.

“We needed to cancel a aid ban from the United States. For us, intelligence exchange is very important.”

Witkoff falls for Moscow’s “novels”

This was not prevented from reprimanding Zelinski made by Steve Witkeov, Trump’s super envoy, a real estate billionaire who turned into a diplomat dealing with the Middle East as well as the Russian Bakrani War.

In an interview last week with Taker Carlson, the right -wing podquaster in the United States, Witkev wandered into the UK’s Starmer campaign in the United Kingdom to create a “alliance of those wishing” to support Ukraine.

The American said it was a position and position, a “simplified desire” to look like Winston Churchill. His words are directly proportional to what appears to be a stable point of view in the Trump administration that their former allies in Europe are a parasitic burden on the United States.

What if it is right? Make insults and admit that the richest European countries have chosen for decades, to spend most of their great wealth in matters that she considers more urgent than armies.

Zelinski said that Witkeov and others in the Trump administration were fell into Russian propaganda.

“I think Witkoff is often quoted by the Kremlin novels … I cannot be exposed to the Americans for everything they did, but they often unfortunately, under the influence of Russian novels. We cannot agree with these novels.”

Zelensky suggested that Witkoff was better in his old job, and the development of real estate in Manhattan.

“It does not seem like a military man. He does not seem to be a general, and he has no such experience. As a science, he is very good in selling and buying real estate. This is a little different.”

In it for “long distances”

President Zelinski, for a man who lived with enormous pressures since Russia’s invasion of more than three years ago, was significantly crowded, and was clearly happy with the reception that he had in Paris and the efforts made by President Macron and Prime Minister Starmer to mobilize European support, and even Kajol, and Trump is not to cut intelligence and the military president to August.

Zelensky seemed happy with its new strategy of agreeing to the temporary ceasefire to force Putin to show his hesitation to stop the war.

Zelensky asked how he was dealing with pressure. He said that his goal is that his children be able to “walk in the street, not to have to hide.” And how I think he will remember him; As a man who saved Ukraine, or tried and failed? Zelensky a little courage. He said Putin is better than Putin, who was growing up and fearing his people.

“He will die soon. It is a fact. His rule can end before he ends his unimportant and unpleasant life historically. This is what he fears.”

Zelinski laughed.

“I will do my best to defend Ukraine as much as I can. I am definitely smaller than Putin.”

Trump may hope to have a deal by Easter. Zelensky is still looking for the long term.
