US Justice Department to release only part of Trump investigation report | Donald Trump News

US officials announced plans to publish only part of a report detailing federal investigations into President-elect Donald Trump, after a court decision to block some of the results.

The Justice Department indicated on Wednesday that the published report will focus on Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into Trump’s efforts to undo the results of the 2020 election.

However, the report will not address a second federal investigation that looked into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents while out of office, after his first term ends in 2021.

This announcement means that some ideas regarding the investigation into secret documents are unlikely to reach the public in the foreseeable future.

Trump is scheduled to take office for his second term in less than two weeks, on January 20, at which point the Justice Department will fall under his control.

Confidential documents investigation He was once considered the most threatening to Trump, who was embroiled in a sprawling web of legal cases. He is the first US president to be convicted of criminal offenses.

But Trump denied any wrongdoing in all cases. He has repeatedly criticized the investigations as politically motivated and “fake.”

While the classified documents section of the report will not be released to the public, the Justice Department has indicated that it will make its contents available to the chairs and members of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees.

These members must agree not to publish this section while legal proceedings regarding the confidential documents issue are ongoing.

“This limited disclosure will advance the public interest in keeping congressional leadership informed about an important matter within the Department while protecting the interests of the Defendants,” the Justice Department wrote in its filings with the court.

These measures were at the heart of the decision to prevent the publication of the confidential documents section of the report.

On Tuesday, Federal Judge Eileen Cannon ruled temporarily Banned its releaseCiting the ongoing legal battle.

Although charges against Trump in the classified documents case were dropped in November, his co-accused – Trump employees Walt Nauta and Carlos de Oliveira – still face the possibility of criminal prosecution.

Nota, an aide, and De Oliveira, a maintenance employee at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, were accused of helping the president-elect withhold and hide classified documents, despite a subpoena to hand them over.

Defense lawyers said publishing the report would inappropriately interfere with their right to a fair trial.

The Justice Department has not yet determined when it will publish the other volume of the report, which focused on allegations of election interference.

Smith filed a motion to dismiss charges in that case in November as well, citing Trump’s imminent return to office. He pointed to the Justice Department’s policy against prosecuting a sitting president.

That case centered on Trump’s actions in the lead-up to and after the November 2020 election, when the Republican president faced off against Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

Trump lost in the end. But Smith and his team of federal prosecutors said Trump entered into a conspiracy to defraud the United States by overturning his defeat and disrupting the formal proceedings to certify the correct result.

Trump has continued to falsely claim that he won the 2020 race and that his victory was negated due to widespread voter fraud.

In a court filing on Wednesday, the Justice Department said Attorney General Merrick Garland had “clear” authority to release the volume of the report that focuses on election interference charges.

“In fact, with regard to the first volume of the final report, the situation of the accused is no different from that of any other member of the public,” the ministry said.

Garland, a member of outgoing President Biden’s administration, appointed Smith as a special adviser In 2022 To avoid any conflict of interest, a political appointee may lead the case.

Justice Department regulations require Smith to submit a final report to Garland.

The prosecutor said he would make any private reports he received public: A. has been released a report Written by Special Counsel Robert Hoare about Biden’s handling of classified documents outside of public office.

But Trump and his defense team fought to stop the prisoner releases. At a news conference Tuesday at Mar-a-Lago, Trump criticized Smith, calling him a “disgrace.”

“He wanted to do a report before I probably took office, so he’s going to do like a 500-page report, and it’s going to be a fake report, just like the investigation was a fake investigation,” Trump said. “Why is he allowed to write a fake report?”
