US and UK in talks on trade deal that could spare Britain from tariffs

Donald Trump said he was working on a commercial deal with the United Kingdom and suggested that Britain can escape definitions if the two countries secure, but the allies have failed to agree on US security guarantees to Ukraine.

During a warm joint press conference at the White House on Thursday, the US President said his counterpart in the United Kingdom Sir Kerr Starmer was “working hard” to persuade him not to impose a tariff on Britain.

“I will tell you that he got anything against the hell they were paying there, but he tried,” Trump said of Starmer, describing him as “a very difficult negotiator”. “We can end up with a real commercial deal where the definitions will not be necessary. We will see.”

Trump’s suggestion that the UK can avoid the definitions a day after the European Union threatened 25 percent of its exports, and hours after he said it would press customs duties on Mexico and Canada and boost its planned tax on China.

Trump said the United Kingdom is “a completely different place” from the European Union.

Starmer confirmed that the United Kingdom and the United States on Thursday decided to “start working on a new economic deal with advanced technology in essence.”

British officials said that the two sides were aiming at an economic agreement and technology at stages stopping the full free trade agreement.

Trump said that Vice President JD Vance and US Treasury Secretary Scott Payette were among the senior officials of the American administration working on the potential deal. “I think we have a deal.. And the fastest what can be done.”

However, attempts to conclude commercial deals for the United States of America have stumbled in the past due to the British rejection of accepting some American agricultural products. The idea of such a commercial agreement was a central argument for the championship activists almost a decade ago.

Paul Dales, UK economist at Capital Economics, said a full trade agreement with the United States faces great obstacles, but it will be a “real reward” if the UK achieves the most humble goal of avoiding the imposition of Trump’s tariff.

The meeting between Trump and Starmer, who was focusing on securing a peace agreement for the war in Ukraine, came days after French President Emmanuel Macron visited the White House to hold similar discussions.

Ukrainian President Folodimir Zelinski will meet in Washington on Friday, with signs of melting their relationship. When asked about the reference in advance to Zelinski as a “dictator”, Trump said: “Did you say that?”

European leaders urged Trump to provide a military cover for any peacekeeping task in Ukraine. But on Thursday, Trump said that the United States will not need to provide such a “background” because the Americans working in proposed minerals with Kiev will serve as a deterrent against potential Russian attacks.

“We are at the back because we will be there, we will work in the country,” Trump said in the Oval Office.

“This is a wonderful economist for them,” he said. “We will have a lot of people there. I don’t think you will face a problem.”

Trump said that the United States “will definitely try to get a lot of” Ukrainian Russian “as we can return” and that we will discuss this during their own meeting. “They have been fought for a long time and difficult on the ground,” Trump said.

The American president, who accepted an invitation from King Charles to visit the monarch in Scotland and the possibility of a second country’s visit to the United Kingdom, was built on Starmer, describing him as a “distinguished man.”

Trump said, “I have always been interested in the British,” Trump said. “They don’t need much help, they can take care of themselves.”

But the American president added a qualification that is likely to be seized by Starmer: “If they need help, I will always be with the British, well? But they do not need help.”

Trump Starmer, who will host a meeting with European leaders from 18 countries in London on Sunday to discuss the European defense, told Russian President Vladimir Putin to respect any peace agreement with Ukraine.

“I think he will keep his word,” Trump said. “I talked to him, I knew him for a long time now.” He added: “I don’t think he will violate his word. I think the deal will carry.”

When asked if he was trusting in Putin, Trump said he had a “confidence and investigation” approach to the Russian president.

During the White House meeting, Trump also supported Britain’s deal unexpectedly to abandon the sovereignty of the Chaghus Islands to Mauritius under a long -term agreement to secure the future of the UK military base in Diego Garcia for up to 140 years.

“We will have some discussions about it very soon, and I have a feeling that it will succeed very well,” Trump said.

While the conversation between Trump and Starmer was often friendly, Vans said earlier that the United Kingdom was responsible for “violations about freedom of expression that not only affects the British. But it also affects American technology companies, and thus American citizens.”

Starmer retreated, saying that the United Kingdom suffers from freedom of expression “for a very long time,” adding that it “will continue for a very long time.”

Starmer started his meeting with Trump by handing him a speech from King Charles, where the king called on the American President to Scotland.

The visit aims to prepare the land for what Starmer called the “historical” country’s “historical” visit to the United Kingdom – the first time that an American president has obtained honor twice.

When asked if he would take the offer to visit Scotland, Trump said, “The answer is yes”, adding that the king was a “beautiful man.”
