‘The majority of Greenland’s population wants independence’ | Politics News

Copenhagen, Denmark – For Donald Trump, President of the United States who displays himself as a detective maker, Greenland seems an irresistible opportunity.

He has long said that he wanted to buy the vast and vast ice island that is part of Denmark, rich in unexploited metal resources and its home for about 56,000 people.

In 2019, during his first term as president, Trump suggested that the United States should buy Greenland and framing it as a real estate deal.

In 2025, the president again, Trump said he was concerned about national and economic security, believing that China and Russia pose a threat. Both countries climbed their military activities in the Arctic.

Trump also asked whether Denmark has rights in Greenland, and stated that if this is the case, Copenhagen must abandon the United States.

“I think Greenland will get it because it relates to the freedom of the world,” he told reporters on the air plane last month.

He refused to exclude a military attack if his demands are not met, a threat to open a new chapter of tensions with Europe.

In 2019, the proposal was rejected.

Kim Kilsen, President of Nalac Cyrus, the Greenland government, said the region was not offered for sale.

Green and Danish governments now find themselves confirming the same message.

The current head of the Greenland government, Mute B EGEDE, stressed the aspirations of independence and affirmed interest in cooperation with other powers – including Denmark, the European Union and the United States.

Al -Jazeera conducted an interview with Berger Bobel, a social scientist and professor of Fakhri in EliaSaSromatovic – Greenland University, about the increasing tensions, Donald Trump Junior’s recent visit to Greenland, the last opinion polls in the region, the relationship with Denmark and the increasing climate of challenges in the Arctic due to the increase in charging.

Al Jazeera: Donald Trump, Junior Greenland, visited Donald Trump’s own idea to sell an idea – that the United States buys that would improve Greenland’s fortunes. According to local reports, some Greenland has been forced to say in the film that they lack everything and love the United States. Does Greenlanders like the United States?

Burger Bobel: The sale of the idea is very accurately intended to visit Trump Junior for half a day to Nuk.

Trump’s vanguard arrived on the previous day, where they handed over Maga hats to the people who met them, who then agreed to be at Nok airport when Junior and the public relations team arrived.

Upon his arrival, Junior was received by a local Trump supporter who participated in the Trump election campaign as an activist, along with a few handful of the local population who wear Maga caps and a group of Country Nook citizens.

One of the events was a lunch in a luxurious local restaurant, where the local population-especially socially deprived and resources-got a free meal.

Junior’s visit was a public relations trick. He claimed that he was on a tourist visit, but he and the group came with political messages in the first place – based on fake news and processing information. This also applies to his statement about Greenlands’ opinions about the United States.

Four out of five parties in [Greenland’s Parliament] In devicesartut – including both government parties – Greenland’s independence as part of their political programs. The majority of Greenland’s population wants independence within 10-20 years, and the condition of maintaining the standard of living.

A recently published opinion poll showed that 85 percent of Greenlanders do not want Greenland to leave the Danish scientist and instead it becomes part of the United States.

If Greenland’s population is given the choice between being Danish or American citizens, 55 percent will choose Danish citizenship, while 8 percent choose American citizenship.

Al -Jazeera: How should Trump’s view be evaluated that Greenland is linked to American national and economic security? Do China and Russia make threats?

Bolble: If one takes Trump’s words at the nominal value, the threat cannot be stronger. It should also be noted that Trump threatened against one of the most loyal NATO partners in the United States.

This is just an example of Trump’s failure to accept or respect the international social system based on the rules where national borders are recognized. Thus, Trump’s statement also contributes to legitimacy, for example, [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s war against Ukraine.

The United States has opportunities to achieve its geological goals in Greenland with a base in North Greenland and a defense agreement with Denmark.

If “economic security” means reaching raw materials, for example, rare ground elements (RE), then called on Greenland’s autonomy American and American companies to apply for exploration and development licenses in Greenland.

Only one American company has a license.

Therefore, there may be reasons for Trump’s statements – either because of the insufficient look at the actual circumstances, or that the desire to own Greenland is to attract the main voters to indicate that “making America great again” must be understood in the way that is the situation with Panama channel.

Al -Jazeera: The Arctic was usually seen as freezing and far not only geographically, but also politically. What is changing?

Bolble: Global warming means, among other things, that the ice cover in the northern ocean decreases in both the range and thickness. This means increasing charging movement, not the least of which is through the northeastern corridor.

Increased charging will also mean increasing traffic from China and Russia, as it seems that Trump is afraid that part of this movement will consist of marine ships from Russia and China.

In recent decades, Russia – in line with the possibility of access to the Russian Arctic coast – has updated and upgraded military facilities along the coast, and has modernized the Russian navy with the ice slit.

In an interview, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio justified the increasing security needs of the United States in the Arctic, because China may want port facilities in Greenland. Rubio saw this as an argument for Trump’s desire in the United States to own Greenland.

The five countries in the Arctic-Canada, Greenland/Denmark, Norway, and Russia, the United States-which borders the Arctic Ocean, in the so-called Illulissat Declaration since 2008, is committed to resolving conflicts in the region by peaceful means. Ten years-in 2018, the five coastal states in the Arctic confirmed the Illulissat advertisement, thus maintaining the Arctic as a low-tension area.

There is no doubt that Russia and China have an increasing interest in the Arctic. Russia, which is determined by the long coast lines in the northern frozen ocean, has updated military installations in the Arctic, and China has an interest in oil and gas from the Russian part of the Arctic and in the future use of the sea lanes in the Arctic in the future with less transportation costs.

Al Jazeera: Europe shocked Trump’s promise to seize Greenland by any necessary means. The Danish government launched plans to enhance security in Greenland. How do you see Denmark’s response?

Bolble: The Greenland government and Greenland members in the Danish Parliament indicated the need to increase priority to monitor green lands and water off the Greenland coast for years.

In 2019, the Danish government decided to increase Greenland’s monitoring and allocate money for this purpose, but in the past four years, despite the green political pressure on the Danish government, nothing has been done to improve monitoring.

The United States has the option – in agreement with Greenland and Denmark – to create more rules but did not benefit from the individual option.

Al Jazeera: What can you tell us about the US base in Greenland?

Bolble: The United States established Thuoul Air Force Base in 1953 after the indigenous population of the region, Inguet, was transferred by force by the Danish state to make room for al -Qaeda.

The rule, which is now called Pituffik Space Base, has early warning systems, space monitoring and satellite driving. The civil part of the base, sometimes, provided job opportunities for both green and Danish workers.

Al -Jazeera: Are you concerned about the climate in the long run?

Bolble: Increased American production of fossil fuel will mean increasing carbon dioxide emissions and leading to high temperatures, thus increasing the melting of all types of ice.

Trump dreams that he is able to export more oil and gas, and will increase the increase in charging in the effect of the climate.

Marco Rubio’s statements that the transfer of fossil fuels to a large extent must happen from the north, and will also mean along the western coast of Greenland the danger of environmental disasters in the marine environment in the weak North Pole and will affect, in any case, on wildlife – not the least of which are marine mammals, Which is very sensitive to noise.

This interview was gently released for clarity and brevity.
