South Africa’s Antarctica base hit by assault claims: What happened? | Science and Technology News

The South African authorities put a member of a distance research team at the national base in South Africa (Sanae) on the Antarctica in light of the psychological evaluation after reports on his violent behavior, including physical assault and sexual harassment of his team.
Reports of the first time were reported at the end of last week by the Sunday Times in South Africa, which claimed that it witnessed an email to the distress sent by a crew to government officials. This person defended the rescue and said that the violent employee had killed.
The officials said that psychological advisers have since had a distance and that the accused crew member is “cooperative”.
Here is what we know about the accident and the research work that is done at the Sanae IV base.

What happened?
During the weekend, the Sunday Times reported that “a real horror movie” was playing on the isolated Antarctica base, which includes a crew of nine men.
The newspaper reported that it had seen an email sent from a team member to the Ministry of Environment in South Africa, which supervises the search tasks. In the email, the team member claimed that another member of the crew, who was not named by the Sunday Times, attacked the al -Qaeda leader and threatened a death threat.
“His behavior has escalated to a very annoying degree,” he read the email, according to the Sunday Times report, where the complainant requested an “immediate procedure” from the authorities.
“I am still worried about my safety, I constantly wonder if you have become the next victim.”
According to the BBC, who quoted official sources, “a dispute over the task of the team captain wanted the team-the task of the weather equation requires changing the table,” caused the conflict.

Where is the rule and what does the team do there?
The Sanae IV base is about 4000 km (2500 miles) from South Africa, 80 km (50 miles) “Interior” from the edge of the eastern Queen Mood region on the continent. Three orange brown, floating on a rocky beet on the edge of a series of hills of the AHLMANN mountains surrounded by an ice ice dish. Researchers in South Africa collect scientific weather data for climate control, weather studies, and geological surveys there since 1960.
According to the information received from the South African National Program (SANAP), the current team was published on February 1 and led by MBULAHENI Kelcey Maewashe technician. Among the other members of the crew are one doctor, scientists and several engineers.
Search teams often have such work together in close places and against a background of hostile weather-in that dark days 24 hours in winter-several months before they can leave. Antarctica is entering winter now.
There is often a significant connection to the outside world. This team is expected to remain for 13 months, and one supply ship is scheduled to reach them in December – next summer in Antarctica – according to the program’s website.
How did the South African government respond?
In a statement issued on Monday, the South African authorities confirmed that they first received a distress message on February 27. That message reported an alleged assault on the al -Qaeda leader – they are supposed to be Moachin, but it is not confirmed by the officials.
The statement added that the Ministry of Environment “immediately activated the response plan to mediate and restore relations at Al Qaeda” and that the incident is being investigated and allegations of sexual harassment.
Officials said that the government members of the Ministry of Environment and the advisers had intervened. The officials said they were supportive, but they would also be “firm in dealing with discipline cases.” No member of the team was named.
The ministry said: “The perpetrator of the alleged crime has participated in Tayeb Khater in more psychological evaluation, and it has shown remorse, which is a cooperative of good mind.” The statement wrote that the accused team member had also wrote an official apology for the alleged victim of the attack, as stated in the statement.
The officials said the team will not be evacuated.
The authorities said that all the crew members underwent a psychological evaluation before they were published, to test their fitness for extreme isolation and weather they will face, and they were all announced.
The Ministry of Environment said: “It is not uncommon that as soon as individuals reach the very remote areas where the scientific rules are, a preliminary seizure of the environment is required,” said the Ministry of Environment.

What other countries have rules on Antarctica?
There are about 70 permanent searches on the ice continent – as well as in the nearby islands – run by many countries. While some rules are active throughout the year, other facilities only operate during the summer months in Antarctica from October to March, when animal species are active.
A few of them, in addition to South Africa, Sanae IV, include:
- US: Amundsen-Scott and McMurDo Station
- China: Hunlon Station and Great Wall Station
- Russia: Vostok, Bellingshausen, Progress and Mirny Stations
- Poland: Arctowski Station
- India: Bharati station
- Brazil: Leader Firz Station
- South Korea: Jang Bogo and King Sejong stations
- Ukraine: Akademik Vernadsky Station
- Chile: Gonzalez saw a search base
- Argentina: The Base of the Antarctic Brown Brown

In 1959, the Treaty Systems in Antarctica for Stances were defined and made sure that researchers and countries are working together to maintain virgin ecosystem on the continent. The stations operate about 1,200 people in all winter months and about 4000 people in the summer.
Are there other violent incidents in the rules in Antarctica?
Such incidents, though rare, were recorded on such campaigns in the past.
- In October 2018, reports of stabbing in the dining hall at the Bellingshausen research station appeared by Russian. The perpetrator, Sergei Savitsky, an electric engineer, was 54 years old, and placed under “the arrest of the house” in Russia. It was noticed that he was “emotional collapse.” The victim, 52 -year -old welding Olig Biloguzov, who was injured and evacuated Chile for treatment, later dropped charges for Savitsky’s remorse.
- Marion Island Station, South Africa, which is close to Antarctica instead, reported a violent incident in 2017 after a team member broke a colleague room with problems in the relationship.
- Teams from Australia and the United States have revealed allegations of sexual harassment against crew in separate reports commissioned by the South Antarctic Square programs in 2022. Members complained of unwanted requests for sex and the presentation of pornography, among other issues.
