Russia-Ukraine war: How the US position has changed on UN resolutions | Russia-Ukraine war News

Three years after Ukraine firmly supported, the United States took a sharp turn and voted against the United Nations General Assembly Resolution (UNGA) condemning Russia for its invasion.

The United States also submitted its own decision on Monday – which did not explicitly blame Russia for the conflict and called for a war against neutral terms.

These moves reflect the growing gap between the United States and Europe, as well as the shift in Washington’s policy on Ukraine under the administration of US President Donald Trump.

Here is what you need to know about the shift in politics:

What happened with the Unga decision?

The United States was one of 18 countries to vote against the decision, entitled “The advancement of a comprehensive, fair and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

The decision, which the United States clearly opposed, approved it was Moscow, And not KyivWhich – which This ongoing war started In 2022, UNGA members called for reaffirming their commitment to “sovereignty, independence, unity and regional integrity.”

It also asked the members to confirm that it is illegal to take the lands by force or threaten power and called on both sides of the struggle to comply with international law and protect civilians, “especially women and children.”

Perhaps most importantly, he asked Russia to withdraw immediately from Ukraine and end the war.

The United States voted, along with Russia, North Korea, Hungary, Israel and a handful of other countries, against the decision.

What does the United States want instead?

The United States has proposed its own decision at the Unga, entitled “The Road to Peace”, and called for a permanent peace between Russia and Ukraine, but without blaming those who started the war.

The decision was saddened by “tragic loss in life throughout the conflict over the Russian Federation-Ukraine.” In addition, he repeated that the purpose of the United Nations is to preserve international peace and “settle disputes in peace”.

But France has made amendment to this draft, adding references to Moscow on a large scale, to the sovereignty of Ukraine and regional integrity.

Then this decision was passed by UNGA, with 93 votes in favor of, 8 against, and 73 abstaining from abstinence. The United States has declined to vote on this decision.

However, the United States then prompted the original draft of the decision to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). It has gone through a 10-0 vote with five abstinence from the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Greece and Slovenia.

UNSC decisions are legally binding and Unga is not, but they reflect and sometimes affect how the world is considered a conflict.

How is this different from what the United States did in the past?

Since the war began, the United States has voted in favor of six UNGA decisions that were similar to Monday.

With the paralysis of the numbers in which Russia’s ability to veto the cassation, Unga has become an important body for decisions on Ukraine.

Below are six previous UNGA decisions that passed:

  • March 3, 2022 – 141 countries, including the United States, voted in favor of a decision condemning Russia’s declaration on February 24, 2022, of a “special military operation” and reaffirming that the regional acquisition by force is illegal. The decision demanded that Russia stop using force against Ukraine and withdraw its forces from the region. Five countries voted against it.
  • March 24, 2022 – The United States joined 139 countries and voted in favor of a resolution that reaffirmed “its commitment to sovereignty, independence, unity and regional integrity of Ukraine,” and called on Russia to withdraw its forces.
  • April 2022 – 93 countries, including the United States, voted in favor of UNGA Resolution Russia’s membership suspension In the Human Rights Council.
  • October 2022Washington supported the UNGA decision that won 143 The condemnation of the Russian attachment Ukrainian lands.
  • November 2022 – the We voted for good From the UNGA decision, which won 94-14 calls Russia to Compensation To Ukraine, with Russia also inviting Russia to stop the use of power and withdraw forces.
  • February 23, 2023 – a accuracy Calling on the regional acquisition by illegal force and asked Russia to withdraw its forces from Ukraine, which was approved by 141-7. Washington voice In favor of this decision.

Only one decision of UNSC, which focuses on Russia’s war on Ukraine, has gone through.

This was on February 27, 2022, and he called Emergency session At the General Assembly on Ukraine. The United States voted in favor of this and the emergency session after a day.

In October 2022, the United States sponsored a UNSC Resolution Decision The condemnation of the “illegal referendums” held in the Ukrainian Russian territories. He also called Russia to withdraw its forces from Ukraine. This decision failed after the veto against Russia.

What does the United States say to the world?

US Deputy Ambassador Dorothy Xia said that multiple United Nations resolutions in the past, which called for Russia to withdraw its forces “failed to stop the war.”

Before voting, Xia said the war “lasted for a very long time” and harmed both Russia and Ukraine.

“What we need is a decision that determines the commitment from all the member states of the United Nations to bring a permanent end of the war,” said Xia, before the vote. She said this is the first step that “puts us on the way to peace.”

This is a blatant contradiction with the comments made by Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the American ambassador to the United Nations during the era of former President Joe Biden.

“Every day, Ukrainian families live in fear of Russian war crimes;

“It is clear that Russia has no consideration of Ukrainian life. But it is also clear that Russia does not have Russian life.”
