Philippines Duterte’s first night in a jail cell is a pivotal moment for the ICC

Outside the detention center of the International Criminal Court (ICC), where the former Philippine President Rodrigo Detert was transferred on Wednesday, his supporters gathered, waved national flags and screaming, “I return it!” It was also driven by important iron gates.
Shortly before his landing in the Netherlands, the 79 -year -old defended his bloody “war on drugs” that the International Criminal Court says there are “reasonable reasons” to accuse him of murder as a crime against humanity.
Drug dealers, users and others were killed without trial on his watch as a mayor, and later, as president.
The number of official fractures is 6000, although activists believe that the real number can coincide with tens of thousands.
Duttri said he had recorded drug dealers to rid the country of street crimes.
However, rights groups claim that the campaign was widespread in the treatment of the police, as it targeted the youth of the urban poor.
Duxe is the first former Asian state president who is accused by the International Criminal Court – and the first suspect to be transferred to The Hague in three years.
His arrival comes in a pivotal moment of the International Criminal Court.
How did it end up Rodrigo Duttrt in the prison cell?
The arrest and deportation of Rodrigo Dutti on Monday was the result of a series of unprecedented events.
His supporters claim that the International Criminal Court is used as a political tool by the current president of the country, Ferdinand Marcus, who has publicly fell with the strong family of Dotrt.
ICC is the last resort court designed to keep its strongest when local courts are unable or unwilling to do so. But this case is a reminder of the extent that depends on government cooperation in order to fulfill the state – it does not have effective power to arrest people without the cooperation of the countries that are often rejected.
In the case of Duterte, his chances that he tried by the International Criminal Court could not be imagined even in 2022, when his daughter, Vice President Sarah Doterti, allied with Marcus to create a strong “universe” that swept the parliamentary elections.
Even a few months ago, Marcus rejected the idea of cooperation with the International Criminal Court.
But the pace with an arrest warrant was presented, and its delivery shows that when the political wind turns, it can find those that are not subject to surveying themselves in the decline in The Hague.

The entire process was documented to deliver him – from his detention in Manila to his arrival in The Hague – on social media by his daughter Kitty and my home through his assistant. His aircraft was the most consequence of a flight radar.
“I am the person who led law enforcement and the military. I said that I will protect you and I will be responsible for all this,” he said in a video on Facebook, one of the many who have been shared over 24 hours during his trip from Manila to The Hague.
It provided a rare look at what is usually an inappropriate process, and the world was able to follow, and sometimes in the actual time, each step was presented to the meals that were presented on a lethal plane.
A strong victory for the International Criminal Court?
Dotrt’s arrest now sends a strong indication that strong individuals may take responsibility for their actions, and may deter future violations.
His case has also sparked a discussion on the role of the International Criminal Court regarding national sovereignty, which is often raised by non -member states such as the United States, Russia and China.
The court relies on its 128 members to finance it and form the operating arm of this judiciary.
So, Dotte’s arrival to reach his address, followed by his first night in the prison cell in The Hague, provides the court with a victory that affects the need.
After serving high-level arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin, and another for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu due to the war in Gaza-which is unlikely to be imposed anytime soon, Duterte’s arrival will be my evidence that the court is able to bring those accused from the staff to the ice.
It is a Litmus test of the ability of the International Criminal Court to work effectively in an increasingly extreme climate.
The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, was approved by Donald Trump for the arrest order issued by Benjamin Netanyahu.
Dustete detention provides him with a strong response.
“Many international law says is not strong,” Karim Khan has admitted. “But international law is not weak as some believe. When we meet, when we build partnerships, the rule of law can prevail.”

The former Philippine President will now celebrate his eighty birthday this month at the International Criminal Court detention facility, which is in the density in The Hague.
The attachment, which was a Nazi prison complex, provides every detainee of a special cell, access to computers, library, and sports facilities.
If it is not satisfied with the provided meals, Dutete has the option to prepare its food using the shopping menu in the detention center kitchen. He will also have access to medical care, lawyers and visitors.
It is expected to appear before the initial court in the coming days, where he will confirm his identity, choose the language in which he wants to follow the procedures, and recognize the charges against him.
After this general appearance, it will follow the assertion of the charge session, during which the rulers will decide whether the prosecution has provided a sufficient amount of evidence to move forward in the trial.
If the charges are confirmed, it may take several months before he finally tried, and years before the final ruling.
