I stayed until the end, Dr Abu Nujaila. We will remember and rebuild | Israel-Palestine conflict

“Whoever remains to the end will tell the story. We have done what we can – remember us.”

These were words Dr. Mahmoud Abu Nogila He wrote on October 20, 2023, at Al -Wouda Hospital at Gabalia Refugee Camp. he Scribble In the blue ink on the blackboard used in surgery schedules. It was a testament to flexibility, a final message of the challenge.

A month later, Nujaila redefined the moral dimensions of medical performance, not in words, but with his blood. He was killed by an Israeli air strike at the hospital and two of his colleagues, Dr. Ahmed Al -Sahar and Dr. Ziyad Al -Tatari.

The words of Nujaila remained with me for 15 months, as I saw in the horror of how the medical system was bombed in Gaza where I was hoping to work on the rubble, and the doctors who I was hoped to learn from – killing, torture, disappeared by force.

Each aspect of life was stained with death. Every warm memory has been terrified. All certainty is replaced by an unknown identity.

The Shiva Hospital in Gaza City, where I had volunteered in the emergency department just one month before the start of the genocide, was raided, looted and burned. He was the largest hospital in Gaza, who provided critical care that could not be received elsewhere and that brought together highly skilled doctors.

It was not just a place to recover, but also shelter for the displaced. In the end, it turned into a cemetery.

The Turkish -Palestinian Friendship Hospital was bombed, where I joined a university project on awareness of breast cancer, then besieged and closed, and his patients left for death slowly, without power and strength. The fate of the only cancer hospital in Gaza has been closed through its location – lying inside the “Axis of Death” – what the Israeli army calls the Netzarim Corridor, which was established and occupied by the division of Gaza to the north and south.

I was attacked and Jazz Hospital in Gaza City, where my grandmother underwent a critical surgery performed by Dr. Mohamed Al -Ron, a dedicated and skilled surgeon. Then besieged, and cut off the world – its medical staff, patients and displaced civilians trapped from the inside without food or water. In the end, everyone was expelled by force, and the hospital was provided for service.

She later learned that Al-Ron had disappeared by force from another hospital in northern Gaza and was tortured in the Israeli fortified constellations. When he appeared two months later, he lost 30 kg (65 pounds). He was still one of the lucky ones.

Dr. Adnan Al -Jazzar, a pioneering surgeon at the Shiva Hospital, was tortured to death.

Dr. Hafam Abu Soufa, head of Kamal Adwan Hospital, is still in Israeli families, where he was tortured and offended.

More than 1,000 medical workers were killed in Gaza. More than 300 has disappeared.

It is clearly clear that health care workers are targets in Gaza. Medical practice has become a fatal profession.

However, I do not feel fear or frustration. The doctors who stood up to their patients and the danger of their lives during the genocide became an inspiration: Abu Soufa, Dr. Ghassan Abu Sita, Dr. Muhammad Abu Salemia and others.

My sister, Dr. Mariam, Samama Abu Helo, was a bright example for me. She works as a pediatrician at Al -Shuhada Hospital, which is the only remaining job hospital in the south, which overwhelmed and extends beyond its borders. She is fighting alongside her colleagues, and she witnessed terror – wounded children, orphans, burning, malnutrition, frozen to death.

Although the destruction of the Gaza healthcare system and the mass killing of Palestinian health workers witnesses, my design has become a doctor has become stronger in the past 15 months. Gaza needs its sons and daughters more than ever. Therefore, it is an ethical, national and humanitarian convergence in serious study and becoming the best doctor I can be.

In January 2024, I had the opportunity to leave Gaza, but I refused. How can I give up my house when he needed me more?

I did not give up from the Nusiirat refugee camp.

I had search papers minutes before the second evacuation order arrived. I didn’t know where I would go. I didn’t know if there was an internet connection. I didn’t even know if I would be alive. But at that moment, I couldn’t leave my job incomplete.

I begged my father to wait. Just allow me to finish this one task.

I was at risk my life. I have been extinct to my family. However, it remained two hours longer – under the bombing, and he ordered the research papers.

I am one of the hundreds of medical students in Gaza, despite everything, they want to stay. We are all in different stages of training, keen to start our career among the remains of Gaza hospitals, which are guided by the survivors of this attack.

There are medical and workers students waiting for a desperate to return home and service. One of them is my sister, Dr. Samama Abu Hilo, who obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery in Gaza and then followed a master’s degree and doctorate in public health and social justice abroad.

In December, against all difficulties, 80 medical students graduated from Al -Azhar University and became doctors ready to save lives.

I am scheduled to graduate in 2028. I am determined to become a neurosurgeon. Gaza. For my grandmother, he was martyred last year. For my father, who sacrificed everything to help me follow this dream. For every stolen future. For every devastating hospital. Every doctor has lost.

I have succeeded in that, Dr. Abu Nogila. I will carry your story and hit other Palestinian doctors with me.

We will not be defeated.
