Chernobyl reactor shield hit by Russian drone, Ukraine says

Ukrainian President Folodimir Zelinski said that a Russian drone attack had hit the radiation shelter that protects the damaged nuclear reactor from Chernobyl.

He added that the strike overnight in the nuclear factory, which is the worst nuclear accident site in the world, caused a fire that has been extinguished since then.

As of Friday morning, the levels of radiation inside and outside Chernobyl are normal and stable, according to the United Nations Nuclear Control Agency (International Atomic Energy Agency).

Russia has denied any allegations that it attacked Chernebil, saying that its army does not strike the Ukrainian nuclear infrastructure and “any allegations that this is the issue that does not correspond to reality.”

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which monitors nuclear safety around the world, said that fire and vehicle safety employees responded within minutes to an explosion overnight. The agency added any unnoticed injuries.

The agency is still a “high alert” after the accident, as General Manager Rafael Mariano Grossi said that there is no “field of contentment.”

In 1986, a catastrophic explosion in Chernobyl sent a pillar of radioactive materials in the air, which led to a state of public health emergency throughout Europe.

Zelensky posted shots on X showing that it shows damage to the giant shield, made of concrete and steel, which covers the remnants of the reactor that lost its roof in the explosion.

The shield is designed to prevent further leakage of radioactive materials during the next century. It is 275 million (900 feet) and 108 meters (354 feet) and costs 1.6 billion dollars (1.3 billion pounds) for construction.

Since 1990, Professor Jim Smith of the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom has studied the following as the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and while admitting that the strike was a “horrific attack on a very important” “unimaginable” structure of the dangers of radiation.

Professor Smith BBC told the “thick” coffin “coffin” below the damaged outer shield covering radioactive particles and dust from the explosion.

Simon Evans of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) was the head of the Chernobyl Fund for a Detection, who supervised the construction of the protective dome in 2010.

He described the clear strike as “an incredibly reckless attack on a weak nuclear facility.”

“The shield has not been built” to resist the external drone, “he told the BBC.

Instead, it is a “complex piece of operating tools” that are designed to contain radioactive materials at home and to help safely dismantle the broken reactor.

He said that the strike had struck a crane maintenance system designed to rid the reactor.

He added that there are “very serious” damages to the external and internal cladding. But there will be a complete evaluation of the damage before the bank can determine its costs.

Mr. Evans said that the task of building the shelter was “the largest cooperation ever in the world for nuclear safety”, as more than 40 provinces meet to find a long -term solution to deal with the devastating reactor.

“Since the beginning of the war, it was tragic to see that the international cooperation that is undermined by reckless works,” he added.

Zelensky claimed that the attack shows that Russian President Vladimir Putin “certainly does not prepare for negotiations”, after US President Donald Trump said He agreed to start talks to end the war In a sudden announcement this week.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said that the incident in Chernobyl comes after increasing military activity around the nuclear power plant in Zaporesia, southern Ukraine.

In December, Ukraine and Russia accused each other Done -off attack On a convoy of vehicles that transport experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency who go to the Zaporizhzia factory, the largest nuclear station in Europe.

The head of the International Agency for the International Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, condemned that the attack on his employees is “unacceptable”, stressing that the agency “is working to prevent a nuclear accident during the military conflict.”

Last year, the agency urged restraint when an attack on Zaborisvia The risk of a “major nuclear accident” raised. Russia and Ukraine Blame circulating On the attack in August.

Professor Smith told the BBC: “I am more concerned about Zaborisvia than Chernobyl,” Professor Smith told the BBC.

“Retaments [at Zaporizhzhia] It is currently closed but there is more direct fuel there. Chernobyl is still very radiant, but it is not in a “hot condition” because of his age.

The number of people who He died in the Chernobyl disaster that is still disputed.

According to the official, the number of internationally recognized deaths died, with only 31 people died as an immediate result of Tersenobel, while the United Nations estimated that 50 deaths could be attributed directly to the disaster.

In 2005, I expected that 4000 others might die in the end as a result of exposure to radiation.
