What we know about attacker Shamsud-Din Jabbar


Fifteen people were killed and at least 35 injured after one man Inspired by ISIS Authorities said the car plowed into large crowds in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Here’s what we know so far about what happened and who committed the crime.
How did the attack develop?
At 03:15 local time on New Year’s Day, a Ford pickup truck plowed into crowds gathered on Bourbon Street in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter.
Surveillance footage shows a white Ford F-150 Lightning driving down the sidewalk to get around the police car before crashing into the pedestrian.
Police described the act as “extremely premeditated” and added that the attacker – identified as Shams al-Din Jabbar – was “intent on causing the carnage and the damage he caused”.
“This man was trying to run over as many people as possible,” New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick said.
Jabbar was also armed and opened fire on law enforcement, wounding two officers. He was then shot dead by police.
Wyatt Davis, from Shreveport, Louisiana, told the BBC that he was detained at a bar with a large group following the attack while police secured the scene.
He added that when they left, “they were passing by the bodies of the dead and wounded all over the street.”
Who is Shams al-Din Jabbar?

The FBI identified the attacker as 42-year-old Shamsuddin Jabbar, an Army veteran and US citizen from Texas.
An Islamic State-linked flag was found in the car he was driving, and the FBI said it was investigating connections Jabbar may have had with terrorist groups.
Suspected explosive devices were also found in the area.
A long gun with a “suppressive device” – which acts as a silencer – was also found.
According to a now-removed LinkedIn profile, Jabbar worked in various roles in the US Army, including human resources and information technology, before his discharge. He was deployed to Afghanistan from February 2009 to January 2010.
In a YouTube video posted in 2020, Jabbar said his time in the military taught him “the meaning of great service and what it means to be responsive and take everything seriously, dotting and crossing the letters to make sure things go smoothly.” Hitch,” CBS reports.
He studied at George State University from 2015 to 2017, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems.
CBS reported that he was married twice. His first marriage ended in 2012 and his second marriage lasted from 2017 to 2022.
It also appears that he was working in real estate and had a license that expired in 2021. He has a criminal record related to traffic violations and theft.
The pickup truck he was driving was electric and is believed to have been rented in Texas via an app It’s called Toro.
In an evening speech, President Joe Biden said the FBI briefed him on the attack. Biden said the suspect had uploaded videos to social media “just hours before the attack” suggesting he was inspired by ISIS and expressing a “desire to kill.”
Are there additional suspects?
The FBI said it believed the suspect helped carry out his attack, specifically placing suspected explosive devices.
CBS reports that law enforcement has not yet released evidence of these accomplices.
Previous reports said authorities were reviewing the video footage, but CBS reported the footage was slated to show bystanders only.
Who are the victims?
Police said 15 people were killed and at least 35 injured. None of them have been publicly named.
The president of the University of Georgia said that one of its students was seriously injured, while the Israeli government said that two citizens were among the injured.
Police said the victims appeared to be mostly locals from New Orleans, although many tourists were visiting for New Year’s celebrations and the now-postponed Sugar Bowl, part of the College Football Playoffs.
It was scheduled to kick off later Wednesday evening at Caesars Superdome, not far from the site of the attack.
Where did it happen?

Bourbon Street is a popular nightlife spot and tourist hotspot filled with restaurants, bars and clubs offering live music.
It is located within the French Quarter in New Orleans, a lively area that attracts tourists and locals, especially to celebrate the New Year.
Established by the French in 1718, the original street grid designed at that time is the heart of what attracts visitors to the city.
Each year, more than a million people flock to the famous Mardi Gras carnival and springtime parade, which is famous for the colorful strings of beads worn by partygoers.
