Europe scrambles to respond as US and Russia prepare for Ukraine peace talks

Western capitals are preparing for a possible decisive week for European security, as the United States and Russia begin talks to end the war in Ukraine and European leaders hold an emergency meeting to respond to the rapid negotiations without it.

The strongest European leaders in Paris will meet on Monday to hold crises on Ukraine and the future of the European Defense, which was ignited by Donald Trump’s decision to open peace talks with Russia. These talks will start officially in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia this week when Trump’s diplomat is sitting Marco Rubio with Sergey Lavrov, Russian.

Rubio Lavrov’s meeting aims to lay the foundation for Trump to meet Vladimir Putin, less than a week after the shock of European capitals in the United States with approval of his Russian counterpart to start peace talks.

This will emphasize the lack of European inputs in negotiations that can reshape the security structure on the continent.

“This is the beginning of the beginning. Alexander Stop, President of Finland, told the Financial Times that things are definitely moving.” Are tectonic boards change in Europe? “

In reference to the history of the invasion on a large scale in Russia, he added: “I think the global system began to shift on February 24, 2022, and we are now seeing the direction in which it might go.”

UK Prime Minister Kiir Starmer, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and heads of European Union and NATO institutions in Paris tomorrow will be at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron.

The officials who have seen preparations, along with the best ways to support Ukraine and enhance their negotiating position, said they will discuss concrete plans aimed at protecting European defense regardless of US participation in the future.

Starmer said it was “one moment in the generation of our national security, where we deal with the reality of the world today.”

“It is crazy how quickly this is the transfer of this,” said a Western official who briefed the talks. “everyone [Europe] You should do is to give Ukraine as much as possible so that it can say better “no” for the things that shocked its throat [by the US and Russia]”

Putin’s Dmitry Peskov said that Trump’s decision to open the talks was “a strong indication that we will try to solve problems through dialogue and talk about peace instead of war”, in the comments broadcast on State TV on Sunday.

Two officials said that European leaders in Paris will discuss ideas, including a potential deployment of European forces to Ukraine, which will be centered behind, and not on a stop line in the future, as a reassurance force.

But there is uncertainty about the role that the United States will play in ensuring the security of any NATO forces in Ukraine. The Trump team has ruled out the publication of the American forces on Ukraine, but European officials say that the United States did not rule out the possibility of providing external support for any publication by NATO allies.

Many European governments are uncomfortable to respond to the United States to request This week, to obtain specific details about weapons and money and keeping the peacekeeping forces that they will be ready to send to Ukraine after the conflict, according to many officials in the discussions between the capitals.

One of the officials said: “The general feeling is that this is a good exercise regarding thinking about what they can offer, but the response to the United States must be collective.”

“I hope everything that comes out of Paris is attractive to Americans so that we can get more skin in the game,” said Stop.

European leaders and diplomats spent most of their time at the Munich Security Conference during the weekend in an attempt to analyze the roles of the various members of the Trump negotiating team, and how they could finally design the president’s approach.

One European official said that there is a “95 percent agreement” with Keith Kelog, the 80 -year -old retired player who was appointed to Trump’s Ukraine envoy, who described Russia as the “enemy”.

But the official warned that Kellogg’s opinions, which were not called as a member of the four negotiating TROMP team, were not necessarily harmonious with Rubio barrels, for example, “who may not see them in the same way.”

Three people in the discussions said, two said that he indicated that the talks with Lavrov will focus on logistical services and planning to hold Putin’s meeting, and will not enter into the details of the negotiating positions.

With the previous administration [under Joe Biden] “There was no dialogue, just a war without end,” Peskov said on Sunday. He added that Trump’s position “should be more impressive for anyone or a correct country.”

Peskov also said that Russia “will defend its interests so that it is not seduced by any wrong promises” during talks with the United States.
