After splinter, can Sudan’s anti-war coalition reinvent itself? | Sudan war News

On February 10, the largest coalition in Sudan, Taqaddum, finally defected.

The dispute was more than participating in a new parallel government established by the Rapid Semi -Military Support (RSF), one of the parties fighting in the Sudan war that lasted for nearly two years.

The TAQADDUM Alliance was formed in October 2023, armed movements, political parties, civil society activists and headed by Abdullah Hamdouk, the former Prime Minister who was overthrown by the Sudan and RSF army in 2021.

Now, Taqaddum is divided into two parts.

Members who take political positions in the RSF management are now known as Taasis (Foundation). Analysts often said the armed movements, the analysts said, who mortgaged to turn their weapons into leadership roles in the new RSF government.

“Armed groups do not have an electoral circle, so they depend on a senior armed actor [like the RSF] Cold Khair, the founding director of the consulting research tank for meeting, said as a guarantor of a political seat.

She said that traditional political leaders, including Hamduk, who chose not to join RSF formed a smaller alliance against warfare called Somoud (flexibility), in an attempt to preserve their neutrality and reputation.

“Political parties do not need [a guarantor] “It will be for them to commit a government to form a government with RSF … they do not want to look at the formation of a government with genocide,” she added, referring to the design of the United States that RSF committed genocide in Darfur in Darfur. region.

Useful naming

Taqaddum was originally an anti -war alliance at the end of the conflict that broke out between RSF and the army in April 2023, following a dispute over how the first was integrated in the end.

The conflict sparked the largest humanitarian crisis in most measures, as tens of thousands were killed in the armed conflict, which declared famine in several regions and about 12 million people who uprooted their homes.

Taqaddum was already struggling for importance, as many civilian politicians are seen as very close to RSF during mediation talks – apparently aimed at ending the war and restarting the transition to democratic rule that came out of the 2021 coup.

TAQADDUM’s reputation took a much larger blow when a DOP declaration with RSF in January 2024.

DOP is alleged to restore service provisions in areas under RSF control and ensure that the group respects the basic laws of war.

but The deal came days after the arrest of the RSF Wadi Madiani, The capital of Sudan’s reputation, where the atrocities, including rape, looting, and killing were committed outside the judiciary, according to local observers.

At that time, Taqaddum was seen by many egg RSF violations by signing the DOP.

Alan Boussle, an expert in Sudan in the International Crisis Group, said that the agreement also caused many Western diplomats “an increasing concern that parts of Taqaddum were aligned to RSF.”

Hamid Khalifa, a Sudanese policy analyst and a doctoral candidate at Manchester University, agreed that the signing has exacerbated the legitimate crisis of Taqadum.

“There was an issue of Taqaddum that raised with RSF or being a little more in line with RSF because RSF continued to say what Taqaddum wanted to hear and the army was completely resistant. [to peace talks]The immorality of God said: “The immortal of God said.

new beginning?

Analysts told Al -Jazeera that the division may be a “convincing blessing” because it allows Sumud members to distance from RSF, “re -invention of themselves”, and communicate better with Sudanese civilians.

Boswell believes that Sumoud is now less polluted than Taqaddum, but he is also significantly smaller as a coalition and expects the West to “wait and see” before deciding whether Somoud is a neutral actor.

It is also believed to be at best, Somoud may be part of a wider civil unity government, as most officials are compatible with one of the warring parties as part of the power -sharing agreement to end the war.

Khalifa said that Somoud should do more communication with local organizations and active groups and ensure that her speech not contacted the facts of Sudanese civilians on the ground.

“They can admit that people have better experiences when [the army] Khalif Allah told Al -Jazeera, stressing that Somoud can maintain his neutrality because this recognition will not contradict their invitation to the army and RSF to end this war quickly.

Somoud spokesman, Bakri Emmani, Associate Professor at the College of Business Administration, Public Administration and Information Sciences at Long Island University, says that Sumoud has always contacted and believes that any criticism that Taqaddum was very close to RSF as part of the army’s complex staining campaign against the anti -war coalition .

He claims that the army helped write DOP and was called to sign, but he refused to attend.

“We knew from the first day accusations [against Taqaddum] “They were part of a political campaign … everyone knew they were lies,” he told Al -Jazeera Island.

“However, this affected the impression of Taqaddum, but to tell you frankly, I don’t think there is any evidence that Taqaddum was supporting RSF.”
