A blood moon will rise: When and how to watch the total lunar eclipse | Space News

The night sky is about to present a rare scene.
The overall lunar eclipse will occur on March 13-14, 2025, and the moon will be thrown into a deep and copper red color. This eclipse can be observed from the western hemisphere of the Earth.
Here is everything you need to know about the eclipse, and why the moon will appear in red, where you can see it, and how much it is.
What is the total eclipse of the moon?
The lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth places itself directly between the sun and the moon, which hinders the sun’s rays and throws a shadow on the moon.
There are three basic types of this eclipse:
Total lunar eclipse The moon is completely under the Earth and takes a reddish color.
Partial lunar eclipse This happens when the earth’s shadow covers part of the moon. The shade expands and then retreats, but it never reaches the total stage.
Penumbral Lunar Eclipse A hidden phenomenon where the moon passes through the Earth’s outer shade, known as Penumbra. The moon looks pale from usual.
Why does the moon appear red?
During the overall eclipse of the moon, the moon turns red or orange. The only sunlight that reaches the moon must pass through the Earth’s atmosphere.
There, sunlight is escalating in dust particles, water drops and air gases. A phenomenon is known as Rayleight Scattering in toys: sunlight colors associated with longer wavelengths and are able to reach the Earth to reach the moon, while the colors of the shorter wavelength everywhere and do not reach the moon.
The colors range in sunlight – like anyone who saw a rainbow or noticed a perspective – from violet (shorter wavelength) to red (the longest wavelength).
The red light that makes it to the eclipse is reflected on its surface, giving the only natural satellite to the Earth this color.
What time will the lunar eclipse the moon happen?
This lunar overall eclipse will be visible across most of the western hemisphere. North and South America is expected to be able to see the entire process.
Here is a collapse in Greenwich average time:
- Penumbral Eclipse begins: 03:57 GMT (23:57 and)
- Partial eclipse begins: 05:09 GMT (01:09 and)
- The total eclipse begins: 06:26 GMT (02:26 f)
- The maximum eclipse (Deeper red color): 06:58 GMT (02:58 et)
- The total eclipse ends: 07:31 GMT (03:31 f)
- The partial eclipse ends08:47 GMT (04:47)
- The eclipse ends: 09:59 GMT (05:59 f)
The total stage, during which the moon is completely covered with the shadow of the Earth, will continue for about 65 minutes. In general, Eclipse will extend between 03:57 GMT and 09:59 GMT.

Is the blood moon rare?
The overall lunar eclipse is not rare, but it does not happen repeatedly – there is usually a few decades.
The latest blood moon happened on November 8, 2022. It is expected that the next next from 7 to 8 September 2025 will be visible throughout Asia, Africa, Australia and parts of Europe.
The first total of the lunar eclipse since 2022 will come to the night sky on the night of Thursday, March 13 to the early morning from Friday 14 March! 🌕

What is the importance of the total eclipse of the moon?
The overall eclipse of the moon has importance in different ways, from scientific and astronomical importance to cultural and symbolic meanings. Some of these include:
Earth’s atmosphere study: Scientists can analyze installation in the atmosphere, pollution and volcanic activity by examining how sunlight passes through the Earth’s atmosphere.
Foreign planet research: According to NASA, the study of how to bend light around the Earth during the eclipse allows astronomers better for how the planets that revolve around other stars behave when crossing in front of their sun.
It also provides an opportunity to monitor and analyze the interaction between the sun, the moon and the earth.
Culturally, many ancient civilizations have been associated with the lunar eclipse with events, deities, or supernatural events. Some believe that they referred to change or divine messages.
In Hindu myths, the lunar eclipse is associated with the devil, which is believed to swallow the moon. Other cultures look at the eclipse while the moon swallows by other creatures, such as Jaguar in the tradition of Maya or a dog in China.
In ancient Chinese myths, it was believed that a heavenly dog named Tian Joe (天狗) was responsible for causing the lunar eclipse by trying to devour the moon. This story is intertwined with Archer Hou Yi (后羿) and his wife Chang’e (嫦娥).

How do you see the lunar eclipse?
The lunar eclipse is some of the most accessible heavenly events.
To see one, just a step out, and search – not a special telescope or equipment. However, the use of a telescope or a small telescope can enhance the experience by detecting more moon surface details.
NASA also recommends finding a dark location as “Eclipse will be more vibrant in areas far from the city lights and light pollution.”
