Starmer to warn Trump that peace in Ukraine needs US military cover

Sir Kerr Starmer will warn President Donald Trump on Thursday that peace cannot be secured in Ukraine unless the United States offers a military cover for any European stability force, at a major meeting in the White House.
The batch of the British Prime Minister comes, although Trump tells his first cabinet meeting on Wednesday: “I will not make security guarantees beyond many.”
“We will make Europe do it,” Trump added, because “Europe is the neighboring neighbor.”
Starmer Trump will tell in Washington that while Britain will play a major role in strengthening military capabilities in Europe, an American “Backstop” was vital. “I don’t think there will be a deterrent to Putin if we do not have one,” he said.
The White House meeting is part of a group of international diplomacy this week as European leaders begin to try to build a new basis for the continent’s security under Trump’s pressure.
Ukraine President Volodimir Zelinski Trump is expected to meet in Washington on Friday to sign a deal on critical minerals.
Starmer will then host European leaders on Sunday in the United Kingdom, including Zelenskyy, to rid how the continent can “escalate” its defensive responsibilities, including talks about a European Re -Delivery Fund.
“I accept that the European allies, including the United Kingdom, should do more and this means the ability, coordination and spending,” said Starmer.
British officials said that the treacherous goal of Starmer talks with Trump, which followed Washington’s visit, Emmanuel Macron, earlier this week, was to persuade the American president to stay participating in European security.
Trump and his assistants have increased to Russia when describing the conflict in recent weeks. Some Western officials say this negotiating tactics aims to bring Moscow to the table.
After European curtains with bilateral talks with Russia, in recent days, Trump blamed Zelinski in Vladimir Putin’s wide invasion in 2022, describing the Ukrainian leader as a “dictator”.
The United States also surprised Western allies and worried about and Earlier this week, when it joined Russia and broke with European partners to pass a Security Council resolution that called for a quick end to fight, but did not blame the Russian aggression.
However, European officials hope that the United States, as part of the peace agreement in Ukraine Russia, will support the support of Europeans such as heavy lifting capabilities, air defense and long-term missiles-devices that can sit outside Ukraine but can be transferred there quickly.
The United Kingdom and France offered the placement of forces inside Ukraine to work as a deterrent for more Russian aggression, and wants to agree to provide a provision behind the United States.
“What worries me if there is a ceasefire without appearing. Starmer told reporters on their way to Washington:” I think his ambition in relation to Ukraine is very clear, I think everyone will see them. “
“We will play our role and I was clearly that we will need Backstop of some kind.”
Starmer announced an annual increase of 6 billion pounds in defensive spending in the United Kingdom by 2027 this week, with funding from relief cuts. He added that his decision to present the British forces to the post -Try in Ukraine “has not been disregarded.”
Starmer’s commitment to increased defense spending is part of an effort by UK Prime Minister to Woo Trump at a decisive moment for the West.
It is expected that the US President will be offered a government visit to Britain – “he is very fond of the royal family, as you know,” said Starmer – and the UK Prime Minister publishes Winston Churchill’s claim that the UK has a “special relationship” with the United States.
“What I want to achieve is the transition from the strength of the special relationship, especially in a volatile world,” he said. When asked if he was trusting in Trump, Starmer insisted: “Yes, I got a good relationship with him.”
“When it comes to defense and security, we have worked for decades as a bridge because of the special relationship we have with the United States and our loyalty to our European allies,” Starmer said. He added: “This was there before Britain’s exit from the European Union. It escapes Britain’s exit from the European Union.”
However, the relationship is more framed than any time since the end of the Cold War, as Starmer tries to avoid the threat of customs tariffs as well as seeking to push Trump away from his rhetoric to Russia.
Trump has not yet signed an agreement agreed by Starmer to hand over British sovereignty to the Shaghus Islands to Mauritius as part of an agreement to secure the long -term future of the American and state military base in Diego Garcia.
David Lami, UK Foreign Minister, confirmed that the United States has a veto. “If President Trump does not like the deal, the deal will not advance,” said ITV’s Peston.
Starmer and Trump will have a lunch on Thursday at the White House before holding a joint press conference – an event that British officials view with some fear, given the American President’s free style.
On Thursday, UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves will hold talks with European Union Finance Ministers at a Group 20 in Cape Town to create a kind of multilateral defense fund.
Regardless of defense, Starmer will try to enhance economic relations between the United Kingdom and the United States in artificial intelligence and other high -tech areas such as space exploration.
“The United States and the United Kingdom are the only two countries to carry the ecosystems of technology in a trillion dollars, and the Prime Minister will make more integration between the two technical sectors in the two countries to make them the most effective technology sectors in the world,” said Downg Street.
Yougov poll for adults in Great Britain found that 23 percent believed that Starmer would do a good job in negotiating with Trump, while 57 percent said they believed he would do bad work.
